Ukraine War: Russia's Army Suffers High Casualties, Mobilization Efforts Underway

Independent Russian outlets Mediazona and the BBC's Russian service have verified close to 258,989 Russian military deaths in the Ukraine war between February 2022 and September 2026. These figures are based on publicly available sources such as obituaries and social media posts.

In the past ten days alone, over 10,000 new names were added to the casualty list, largely attributed to a list of bodies exchanged between Russia and Ukraine. Experts estimate that the true number of casualties is significantly higher, with Mediazona and Meduza suggesting a potential figure of around 352,000 deaths.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has provided his own estimates, reporting that Ukrainian forces killed or wounded approximately 10,660 Russian soldiers in a single week during recent offensive operations in the Donetsk region. Earlier, Zelenskyy estimated Russia's total losses at about 1.6 million, including around 700,000 fatalities.

The reports of substantial Russian losses emerge as the conflict continues with largely static front lines. Russia has recently intensified its aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities, while Kyiv has responded with drone strikes targeting Russian oil and defense industry sites.
