Ukrainian drones overwhelm Russian tanks' new active protection system

Russian tanks have entered combat for the first time equipped with the Arena-M active protection system, designed to intercept incoming drones. However, the system's recent battlefield debut in Ukraine met with limited success, as Ukrainian drones ultimately destroyed Russian armored vehicles by attacking in overwhelming numbers.

The first documented appearance of the Arena-M system occurred during a Russian assault in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine on July 22. Ukrainian defenders repelled the attack, releasing footage of kamikaze drone strikes that destroyed at least seven T-72B3A tanks, some of which were fitted with the Arena-M system, according to Euromaidan Press.

Despite the system's purpose, Ukrainian soldiers reported that Arena-M did successfully shoot down some incoming drones. Journalists Dmytro Putiata and Rob Lee noted that Ukrainian forces required between 15 and 20 drones to successfully destroy each tank.

This engagement highlights the ongoing challenges in protecting armored vehicles against evolving drone warfare tactics. While the Arena-M system demonstrated some capability, it proved vulnerable to concentrated and high-volume drone assaults.
