Guterres cautioned that the world cannot afford a continuous competitive race in AI safety, which could be fueled by geopolitical divisions and lead to risky practices.
Guterres emphasized that AI governance requires genuine international collaboration and coordinated global action. He intends to discuss AI risks with world leaders during the UN General Assembly's annual high-level week and will advocate for the establishment of safety boundaries for AI.
Earlier this year, Guterres launched an independent scientific panel on AI governance. He stated that AI's impact transcends national borders, making it imperative to establish stricter safety measures to proactively address potential dangers.
In June, Guterres addressed the first UN global dialogue on AI governance in Geneva, calling for broad and comprehensive global control over AI. He warned that the current generation might be the last to have the opportunity to set the terms for humanity's coexistence with machines.
