Underwater Data Centers Explored for AI Infrastructure
The surge in AI demand is prompting a search for sustainable data center solutions, with underwater facilities being explored for potential energy and cooling efficiencies.

The accelerating demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure is creating unprecedented energy consumption for data centers, prompting companies to explore novel locations. The ocean is emerging as a potential site for AI infrastructure, with the promise of improved energy use and cooling efficiency, alongside reduced freshwater and land requirements.
Microsoft previously conducted research into underwater data centers, deploying a facility near Scotland that reported a lower server failure rate compared to land-based counterparts. However, the company discontinued the project in 2024, citing potential regulatory concerns and the need for faster equipment upgrades as possible factors.
Other nations and companies are pursuing similar concepts. China launched a wind-powered underwater data center in 2026 that utilizes seawater for cooling, reporting significant energy savings. Japan is experimenting with floating data centers powered by renewable energy, while Singapore is developing its own floating facilities to conserve land.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. A primary environmental concern involves the potential impact of discharging warm cooling water on marine ecosystems. Furthermore, maintenance and repair of underwater equipment present significant logistical hurdles, potentially requiring the entire data center module to be surfaced for servicing.
