Unicode Consortium previews new emoji candidates for Emoji 18.0
The Unicode Consortium has unveiled draft designs for new emojis slated for Emoji 18.0, expected in September 2026. Proposed additions include a 'cracking face', separate 'comet' and 'meteor' emojis, and a monarch butterfly.

The Unicode Consortium has revealed initial draft designs for new emoji candidates for the upcoming Emoji 18.0 standard, anticipated for release around September 2026. Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Unicode Emoji subgroup, showcased nine new potential emojis on July 14, 2024, which are currently under consideration.
The proposed set includes diverse additions such as a 'cracking face' emoji, a monarch butterfly, a pickle, a meteoroid (which separates the previously combined comet/meteor), a net with a handle, a lighthouse, and two distinct thumb gestures (pointing left and right).
A notable change involves the separation of the 'comet' and 'meteor' representations into distinct emojis. Previously, these celestial events might have been grouped, but the update aims to provide unique icons. The initial design for the 'comet' was reportedly a blue, icy object before being revised to depict a burning rock entering the atmosphere, necessitating clearer visual distinction.
These proposed emojis are now undergoing the standardization process. The final list of approved emojis for Emoji 18.0 will be announced at a later date, but these previews offer insight into the continuing evolution of digital communication symbols.
