United Airlines Aggressively Targets Delta, American Frequent Flyers

United Airlines is actively seeking to lure elite frequent flyers away from rivals Delta Air Lines and American Airlines with a direct status-matching campaign.

The airline is offering travelers with any elite status tier from Delta or American a 90-day equivalent status with United. To retain this status through January 31, 2028, customers must spend a designated amount on eligible United flights within the 90-day period. For example, matching the lowest elite tier requires $1,500 in spending, while achieving United's top 1K status demands $7,000.

This move comes amid intense competition among the major U.S. carriers for high-spending customers. Airlines are vying for these travelers by introducing new premium seats, enhancing lounge access, and expanding international route networks. Industry observers note that United's overt targeting of specific competitors signals a heightened battle for lucrative customers.

United is also leveraging its new Starlink Wi-Fi service from SpaceX as an incentive. While the satellite-based Wi-Fi is being rolled out and is free for loyalty program members, it is not yet available fleet-wide. American Airlines has also partnered with Starlink, while Delta plans to adopt Amazon's Wi-Fi offering.
