United Airlines CEO Approached Delta About Merger

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby proposed a merger with competitor Delta Air Lines last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Discussions between the two carriers ultimately did not result in a deal, sources told the outlet.

Kirby also approached American Airlines earlier this year with a similar merger proposal. That potential deal was reportedly blocked due to political opposition and antitrust concerns. American Airlines rejected the offer, Kirby confirmed in a statement.

"I was hoping to pitch that story to American, but they declined to engage and instead responded by publicly closing the door," Kirby said. He added that such a significant transaction cannot proceed without a willing partner.

The attempts at consolidation come as the U.S. airline industry is dominated by four major carriers: United, Delta, American, and Southwest. Kirby has reportedly viewed mergers as a path to solidify U.S. leadership in the global market. He stated his aspirations differ from traditional mergers focused on cost-cutting through staff and flight reductions.

Following the failed negotiations, Kirby indicated in May that he would not be pursuing further acquisition proposals for United in the near future.
