United Airlines to redesignate economy seats with more space

United Airlines, among the world's largest carriers, has unveiled plans to upgrade its economy class offerings. The airline aims to improve passenger comfort, particularly on longer international journeys.

The carrier will remove the middle seat in certain sections of its fleet. On Airbus A321XLR aircraft, the vacated middle seat will create an open space, offering additional elbow room and a shared table for passengers seated in the window or aisle. These enhanced seats will be available later this year.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase comfort and choice across all cabins. "We're investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin," said Andrew Nocella, United's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, in a press release.

The change reflects an adoption of the "Eurobusiness" seating concept, where airlines like Lufthansa and Air France have offered more spacious arrangements for decades. United stated that it continuously evaluates and tests new approaches to differentiate itself and enhance the overall travel experience.
