University of Oregon Receives $1 Billion Donation to Address Engineering Shortage

The University of Oregon has received a $1 billion donation from Nike cofounder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, the university announced Wednesday. The contribution is reportedly the largest single gift ever made to a comprehensive public university.

The substantial funding is earmarked for the Knight College of Engineering, established in 2016, which aims to address Oregon's growing deficit of engineers. The state is a hub for the semiconductor industry, yet trains fewer engineers proportionally than other major semiconductor states. University figures indicate approximately 2,500 engineering job openings are anticipated annually in the region, with insufficient local talent to fill these positions.

With this donation, the college plans to construct a third building, establish new laboratories, and hire additional faculty. This follows previous contributions from the Knights totaling $500 million in 2016 and 2021 for the campus's development, bringing their total commitment to $2 billion.

The college's curriculum focuses on advancing bioengineering research, biomedical data science, and high-tech workforce training. "We engage with companies to understand their needs and then design our curriculum accordingly," said Bob Guldberg, executive director of the Knight Campus. "Creating talent attracts more companies, and companies hire students."

This initiative seeks to bridge a critical gap in skilled labor for a rapidly expanding technological sector. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects STEM occupations to grow by 8.1% between 2024 and 2034, compared to a 3.1% growth across all occupations.
