University of Phoenix research named Editor's Choice by Glacies

Research from the University of Phoenix, focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence and narrative storytelling in environmental science education, has been recognized as an Editor's Choice paper by the journal Glacies. The study, titled "Harnessing AI, Virtual Landscapes, and Anthropomorphic Imaginaries to Enhance Environmental Science Education at Jökulsárlón Proglacial Lagoon, Iceland," was published in February 2026.

The paper examines how character-driven narratives and human-centered AI can effectively support adult learners in understanding complex environmental science concepts. Authors from the University of Phoenix's College of General Studies, including Jacquelyn Kelly and Dianna Gielstra, developed a method that utilizes engaging characters and AI-generated visuals to make scientific processes more accessible, particularly for non-science majors.

The study reported significant positive student engagement, with 87.1% of surveyed students enjoying the anthropomorphic narratives and 82.0% agreeing that the approach reinforced systems thinking. The method employs narrative framing and consistent visuals to aid learners in visualizing relationships within Earth systems.

Briana Houlihan, Dean of the College of General Studies, commented on the recognition, stating, "Recognition by Glacies as an Editor's Choice paper reflects the quality of scholarship being produced by our faculty and academic leaders." The designation highlights the university's commitment to developing innovative instructional approaches that enhance learning for adult students.
