Unvaccinated woman dies of measles complications in Pennsylvania

A 40-year-old unvaccinated woman in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has died from complications of measles, the county's coroner confirmed. This incident is the third measles-linked death in the United States this year that could have been prevented by vaccination.

All three deaths have occurred in Pennsylvania, which is currently experiencing a significant outbreak with over 670 reported cases and 124 hospitalizations across 37 counties. Prior to these fatalities, the state had not recorded a measles death in 35 years.

Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong stated in a September 12 news release that the death was "a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease."

The case highlights the ongoing risks associated with measles and the importance of vaccination in public health efforts to control infectious diseases.
