Chinese game developer Game Science has provided new insights into its upcoming title, "Black Myth: Zhong Kui." The studio confirmed in an interview that the game's narrative will center on themes of life and death, aiming for greater accessibility compared to its predecessor, "Black Myth: Wukong."

The protagonist's weaponry is set for a change, moving away from the staff used in the previous game. It is suggested that the new character will wield a different weapon, possibly a sword, fitting the mythological depiction of Zhong Kui. Game Science also hinted at the potential introduction of a wider variety of weapons within the game, a significant shift from earlier iterations.

Game Science acknowledged that the narrative complexity of "Black Myth: Wukong," rooted in the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West," presented challenges for some international players in fully grasping the plot. For "Black Myth: Zhong Kui," the developers have opted not to tie the story to a specific literary work. Instead, they intend for the core themes to be more universal and directly presented, focusing on the cycle of existence. The game is expected to retain its predecessor's core design structure, which heavily features boss battles, as the studio believes they have achieved a high standard in this aspect.

The studio's visual fidelity goals are ambitious, aiming to push the photorealistic graphics seen in "Black Myth: Wukong" even further. Development for "Black Myth: Zhong Kui" officially began in June 2025, meaning the first CG trailer, released in August 2025, was produced just two months into the project. Game Science plans to issue at least one project update trailer annually to showcase development progress.
