UPM inaugurates biorefinery in Germany for renewable chemicals
UPM has inaugurated its new biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, which will produce renewable chemicals from wood. The facility has an annual capacity of 220,000 tonnes.

UPM has inaugurated its biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, launching a new industrial platform for renewable chemicals derived from wood. The facility processes lignocellulosic biomass, primarily wood from sustainably managed forests and sawmill residues, into biochemicals.
With an annual capacity of 220,000 tonnes, it is positioned as the world's largest facility of its kind. The ramp-up process has advanced, with stable operation now achieved for enzymatic hydrolysis and the production of lignin-based specialty chemicals.
The new biorefinery represents UPM's strategic move towards developing bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived chemicals. This investment supports the transition to a circular bioeconomy by offering sustainable materials for various industrial uses.
