UPMC Enterprises Invests in Physician Staffing Technology

UPMC Enterprises, the innovation arm of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), has announced a strategic investment in VeloSource LLC, a company specializing in locum tenens staffing. VeloSource utilizes the Syncx workforce technology platform to assist health systems in managing staffing challenges and improving patient access to care.

The investment is intended to fuel the further development of VeloSource's AI-enabled staffing platform, with the goal of creating a replicable model for health systems nationwide. VeloSource offers a comprehensive suite of workforce solutions, including locum tenens physician staffing, vendor management solutions (VMS), and managed service provider (MSP) offerings.

As part of the agreement, Dr. Richard Wadas, an emergency medicine physician and vice president at UPMC, will join VeloSource as Chief Medical Officer, while retaining his roles at UPMC. UPMC Enterprises will also gain a seat on VeloSource's board of directors. This move addresses projections of a significant national physician shortfall by 2038.

Nick Shapiro, vice president at UPMC Enterprises, stated that VeloSource and Syncx provide a technological solution to efficiently fill staffing gaps, ensuring continuity of patient care. The collaboration aims to refine this technology to solve clinical workforce challenges for health systems and patients across the country.
