Urban Company Reports Increased Revenue, Wider Loss in Q1 FY27

Urban Company, a major player in India's home services market, reported its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q1 FY27). The company announced a 44% year-on-year increase in revenue from operations, reaching ₹528 crore. However, this growth was accompanied by a substantial net loss of ₹92 crore, a sharp reversal from the ₹7 crore profit recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.

The company's consolidated adjusted EBITDA also reflected this downturn, reporting a loss of ₹65 crore for the quarter. This occurred despite the core Indian consumer services business generating a positive adjusted EBITDA of ₹67 crore. The decline in profitability is attributed to Urban Company's strategic expansion into the on-demand home-help services segment through its new offering, InstaHelp.

InstaHelp represents Urban Company's entry into the rapidly growing market for instant home services, a segment that has seen new competitors emerge. Scaling this business requires significant investment in building dense networks of both customers and service professionals within local neighborhoods. The company appears willing to absorb these initial losses to establish a strong foothold in this competitive space.

During Q1 FY27, Urban Company's Net Transaction Value (NTV), a metric reflecting the total value of transactions facilitated on its platform, crossed ₹1,465 crore. The company's reported revenue, however, is its retained portion from these transactions, primarily through service fees and commissions charged to both consumers and professionals. Revenue streams also include product sales, membership fees, and contributions from its international operations.
