Urban Company Seeks New Funds Months After IPO

Indian consumer services company Urban Company (UC) is planning to raise fresh capital through equity shares or convertible securities, less than a year after its initial public offering (IPO). The company's board is scheduled to meet next week to deliberate on this potential fundraising.

This move comes despite UC holding over ₹2,019 crore (approximately $240 million USD) in cash and treasury investments as of June. Additionally, a substantial portion of the ₹310.8 crore raised in its previous fresh issue remains unutilized. The primary driver for the new capital infusion is reportedly heavy investment in InstaHelp, UC's instant services vertical.

InstaHelp is currently a significant drag on the company's overall profitability, reporting an adjusted EBITDA loss of ₹132 crore in the first quarter. Management expects InstaHelp to remain loss-making for the next few years, with breakeven not anticipated before fiscal year 2031.

Urban Company's decision to pursue further funding post-IPO reflects a broader trend among listed new-age tech companies. These firms are increasingly utilizing public markets as an ongoing source of liquidity for expansion, avoiding interest obligations. However, investors are shifting focus from top-line growth to metrics like earnings per share and return on invested capital.
