US administration sues Utah to protect Kalshi prediction markets
Federal regulators have initiated legal action against Utah to prevent the state from enforcing its gambling ban against the prediction market platform Kalshi.

The US administration has filed a lawsuit against the state of Utah, aiming to block state-level enforcement of anti-gambling laws against the prediction market platform Kalshi. This legal challenge marks the tenth time federal regulators have intervened in state-level disputes regarding the operation of these markets.
The conflict follows a lawsuit filed by Utah last week, in which the state sought to prohibit Kalshi from offering contracts related to sports, election results, and political events. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown has stated that the platform functions as an online casino, asserting that such activities violate the state's constitution, which has prohibited gambling for over 130 years.
The case underscores an ongoing jurisdictional clash over the classification of prediction markets. While proponents describe them as analytical financial instruments, state officials in Utah maintain that they constitute unregulated gambling subject to local prohibition.
