US-Africa Trade Desk Highlights Cotton Transparency and New Cashew Processing

The US-Africa Trade Desk (USATD) celebrated significant achievements on Tuesday at an event on Capitol Hill, focusing on increased transparency in the supply chain for American cotton and the launch of new cashew processing facilities in the United States.

The "America's Cotton" initiative, showcased at the event, aims to provide consumers with detailed insights into the origin of cotton and its entire manufacturing process. This effort involves partnerships with cotton farmers across 11 U.S. states and apparel manufacturing countries such as Mauritius, Lesotho, Madagascar, and Kenya.

Additionally, USATD unveiled its cashew program, which involves processing and packaging cashewnuts from West Africa in newly opened facilities in Florida and Alabama. This initiative is designed to solidify the supply chain between West Africa and the U.S., with final processing occurring domestically.

The discussions at the event also covered trade policy between the U.S. and Africa, including the AGOA agreement and its third-country fabric rule. USATD reiterated its stance that U.S. success is amplified when African nations are treated as equal trading partners rather than aid recipients.
