US AI enhances Ukraine's kamikaze drones for autonomous targeting
US company Auterion has developed an AI system enabling Ukraine's low-cost kamikaze drones to autonomously track and home in on moving targets.
US-based technology firm Auterion is supplying Ukraine with an artificial intelligence system designed to significantly upgrade the capabilities of the country's low-cost kamikaze drones. The AI allows these drones to independently identify and track moving targets, reducing the need for constant manual guidance by operators in the field.
Ukraine's military has previously utilized Shrike drones, costing around $400 each and equipped with explosive payloads. These first-person view (FPV) drones have been instrumental in destroying Russian armored vehicles and even helicopters. Now, the Ukrainian military is beginning to receive Shrike drones manufactured by SkyFall, which are equipped with Auterion's Skynode S strike kits.
According to Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier, the system allows operators to initially fly the drone into a combat zone manually. They can then designate a target up to approximately half a mile away before activating a 'fire-and-forget' mode, enabling autonomous terminal guidance.
The integration of this AI technology is expected to substantially increase the effectiveness and precision of Ukrainian drone strikes. Auterion and SkyFall plan to deliver 50,000 Shrike drones outfitted with Auterion's AI system in the coming months, thereby significantly bolstering Ukraine's aerial warfare capabilities.
