The U.S. administration is accelerating efforts to develop an industrially useful quantum computer, setting a target date of 2028. This initiative is supported by a $2 billion investment plan across nine quantum-focused companies, including IBM and GlobalFoundries. The push was a central topic at the recent White House Quantum Summit, which convened quantum policy officials and industry leaders.
The summit aimed to foster U.S. leadership in quantum technology and address the aggressive 2028 deadline for delivering a fault-tolerant quantum computer. While experimental quantum computers exist, creating one capable of solving complex problems beyond the reach of classical computers remains a significant challenge. The 2028 target is considerably more aggressive than deadlines set by defense research programs, such as the Department of Defense's 2033 target.
Industry leaders acknowledge the difficulty. Gregg Bartlett, chief technology officer at GlobalFoundries, stated that the 2028 goal, while challenging, is intended to force acceleration in the field. Officials from the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Energy, alongside the National Science Foundation, expressed unified goals for quantum computing development.
Darío Gil from the Department of Energy recognized industry skepticism regarding the timeline but emphasized the possibility of rapid progress through dedicated work and partnerships. Victor Peng, CEO of quantum computing startup PsiQuantum, highlighted a heightened sense of urgency in Washington to bolster American leadership. The transition from research labs to practical applications is seen as the next major milestone, potentially through hybrid computing systems that combine AI with quantum capabilities for complex problem-solving in sectors like drug discovery and energy.
