US and China Agree on Tariff Cuts Worth Nearly $30 Billion Each

The United States and China have agreed to reduce tariffs on a reciprocal basis, affecting trade worth approximately $30 billion for each country. The deal encompasses a range of products, from agricultural commodities to consumer goods, and is anticipated to stimulate commerce between the two nations.

The agreement follows recent discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Under the terms of the deal, tariffs on over 90% of the listed products will be reduced to "most-favored-nation" levels, effectively eliminating country-specific duties. U.S. officials stated the agreement could enhance market access for American farmers, manufacturers, and workers, while benefiting U.S. consumers with potentially lower prices on Chinese household goods and toys.

China's Ministry of Commerce indicated that the pact will strengthen trade cooperation. The lists include items such as U.S. agricultural products, timber, and medical equipment, alongside Chinese fireworks, tableware, and Christmas ornaments. Businesses in affected sectors have reacted positively, although some note that the immediate impact might be limited, particularly for goods already in transit, such as Christmas decorations.

Sectors of strategic importance, including semiconductors, electric vehicles, and batteries, were excluded from this tariff reduction agreement. Analysts suggest that the $30 billion increase in trade for each side could represent a more significant percentage gain for U.S. exports to China, given the substantially larger trade surplus China holds with the U.S. While not a comprehensive overhaul, the deal is viewed as a constructive development for the trade relationship.
