US Arms Firm Covenant Occupies Production Hall in Leipzig
US defense company Covenant has symbolically taken over a production hall in Leipzig, Germany, for its first European facility. The firm intends to manufacture long-range cruise missiles.

US defense contractor Covenant has symbolically occupied a production hall in Leipzig, Germany, marking the establishment of its first European manufacturing site. The company, specializing in long-range cruise missiles, announced its intentions on Monday.
The Leipzig facility, spanning over 10,000 square meters, is positioned to become Covenant's largest production site, surpassing its current operations in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Israel. Production of the "Anthem" system is scheduled to commence for European clients in 2027. The company aims for an initial output of approximately 1,000 missiles annually, with plans to scale up to 5,000 units per year.
In Germany, the newly formed Mitteldeutscher Sicherheitsinstitut (MISI) in Leipzig is advocating for eastern Germany to benefit from the expanding defense sector. "If we take our times [Zeitenwende] seriously, we must also accept that it takes concrete form somewhere," stated MISI chairman and former Bundeswehr Major General Markus Kurczyk.
Conversely, local peace initiatives have voiced opposition. The "Leipzig bleibt friedlich" (Leipzig remains peaceful) campaign has launched a petition against arms manufacturing in the city, historically known as a site of peaceful revolution. Critics argue that the city's active promotion of the defense industry has occurred without public discourse, contrasting with Leipzig's heritage as a place of peace.
