The US Army has implemented restrictions on its artificial intelligence (AI) usage due to unexpectedly rapid depletion of its allocated service tokens. This move follows a recent statement by the Department of Defense (DOD) highlighting that nearly half of its 3.5 million employees were utilizing AI in their work.
Personnel within Army units, including the Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM), received an email notification about the accelerated consumption of tokens and the necessity for usage limitations. Despite an earlier announcement in May 2026 by the Army CIO promising "unlimited tokens," the central pool was exhausted by mid-June, necessitating the re-establishment of limits.
The Army employs the AI platform Ask Sage, which supports various large language models (LLMs) such as Google's Gemini, Meta's Llama, and OpenAI's ChatGPT. An Army employee, speaking anonymously as they were not authorized to discuss the matter with the press, stated that "the entire Army burned through the whole year of tokens for just one service."
While the Army has opted to renew token usage at "current levels," the future renewal of the Army CIO pool after October 1 remains uncertain. This rapid depletion highlights challenges in managing and scaling AI resources within a large organization, despite initial intentions for broad accessibility.
