US authorizes sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine

The United States government has authorized the sale of 500 PAC-3 Patriot missiles to Ukraine. The transaction, valued at approximately $2.1 billion, involves Lockheed Martin as the primary contractor.

Funding for the acquisition is provided through a multilateral effort involving Germany, Canada, and Norway, supplemented by Ukrainian state funds secured via an EU loan. The authorization follows repeated requests from the Ukrainian government, which cited the critical need for air defense amid sustained Russian infrastructure strikes.

Concurrent with defense updates, significant civilian evacuations have taken place in the occupied city of Oleshky. With international facilitation, hundreds of residents have been relocated. Despite these logistical developments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov signaled that broader diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Washington remain high, citing the continuation of international sanctions.
