US Bans Import of Foreign Robots and Power Inverters

The U.S. government has implemented a new import ban on "advanced robotic devices" and power inverters manufactured in foreign countries. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced on Tuesday that the ban will include "mobile" robots, such as humanoid and quadruped models, but it is not limited to walking robots.

Although the FCC states the move is not targeted at a specific country, it is expected to have a significant impact on China. The country is ramping up efforts to produce humanoid robots, some of which have appeared in viral videos performing dance moves attributed to Michael Jackson or participating in MMA fights.

The ban is anticipated to affect Chinese robot manufacturers, such as Unitree. While specific details regarding the implementation and full scope of the ban are still emerging, it represents a broader effort to restrict access for certain foreign technologies within the U.S. market.
