US Charges Russian Web Hosts in Cybercrime Scheme Netting $62M

U.S. prosecutors have charged three Russian nationals and two web hosting companies with hacking, conspiracy, and money laundering. These entities are accused of providing "bulletproof" hosting services that enabled extensive cyberattacks, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in damages to American businesses.

The individuals, identified as Alexander Volosovik, Kirill Zatolokin, and Yulia Pankova, allegedly owned and operated two St. Petersburg-based web hosts, Media Land and ML.Cloud. These services are known for their resilience against takedown efforts and are frequently utilized by cybercriminal organizations to host malicious infrastructure.

According to the indictment, the accused web hosts aided attackers in conducting various operations, including ransomware attacks and data theft, which collectively generated an estimated $62 million for the cybercriminals. The charges highlight the role of such hosting providers in the broader ecosystem of cybercrime.

The U.S. Department of Justice stated that the indictment aims to disrupt these criminal enterprises and hold those involved accountable. This action underscores ongoing international efforts to combat cyber threats emanating from entities that facilitate illegal online activities.
