US court denies bail for former OpenAI engineer accused of espionage

A US federal court has denied bail for Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former OpenAI engineer accused of conducting industrial espionage against the artificial intelligence firm. Prosecutors contend that Alfozan utilized sophisticated surveillance equipment to monitor private discussions within a high-security conference room at the company’s headquarters.

Court filings from the US Attorney’s office indicate that Alfozan allegedly targeted the firm’s proprietary secrets for personal gain or to support the interests of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Federal investigators discovered communications between the defendant and a member of the Saudi royal family occurring during a period of significant artificial intelligence investment within the nation.

Evidence presented by the FBI includes an iPhone folder titled "Saudi Gov Docs" containing digital files and photographic documentation of a secondary listening device allegedly planted on the premises. While legal proceedings continue, the court ruled that the defendant presents a flight risk, necessitating detention as the government prepares its formal case.
