US Department of Labor Approves National Standards for Tutor Apprenticeships
Four national education organizations announced the U.S. Department of Labor has approved national guideline standards for tutor apprenticeship programs.
On July 27, 2026, a consortium of four national education organizations announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has officially approved the National Guideline Standards (NGS) for Tutor Apprenticeship Programs.
The approval is designed to strengthen educator pipelines by providing a framework for high-quality, workforce-aligned tutoring. The organizations involved – Partnership for Student Success, New Jersey Tutoring Corps, National Student Support Accelerator, and Pathways Alliance – collaborated with education leaders to develop these standards.
The NGS outlines the key competencies tutors must achieve through on-the-job learning and professional development. It also codifies best practices for implementing sustainable apprenticeship programs aimed at recruiting and training individuals for education professions.
"The approval of these National Guideline Standards will help high-quality tutoring programs expand training and professional development for novice educators," said Kate Cochran, Managing Director of the Partnership for Student Success. "This has significant potential to expand the impact of tutoring and support pathways into a wide range of education professions."
To facilitate adoption, the collaborating organizations have also released the Tutor Apprenticeship Toolkit, a free resource offering practical guides and templates for state education agencies, school districts, and tutoring providers to launch their own programs.
