The U.S. Department of Defense is seeking new, cost-effective combat drones to partially replace the MQ-9A 'Reaper' systems. The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has launched a solicitation for the 'Massed Modular Aircraft' (MMA) project, aiming to develop drones significantly cheaper than the 'Reaper'.

This initiative signals a major shift in U.S. military strategy, favoring large numbers of affordable, expendable drones over a few high-value, expensive platforms. The DIU highlights the need for alternatives, particularly when facing advanced adversary air defenses.

The new drones are designated as 'attritable,' meaning their cost is low enough that attrition in combat would not critically impact overall operational capability. Individual 'Reaper' drones can cost upwards of $30 million, and the U.S. Air Force has sustained significant losses of these assets, underscoring their vulnerability.

The MMA project intends to develop modular drones with extensive range, capable of rapid reconfiguration with interchangeable sensors, communication equipment, or weapon systems for reconnaissance, surveillance, precision strike, and electronic warfare missions. Key requirements include high payload capacity, long range, and suitability for mass production.
