US election results trigger slowdown for AI infrastructure expansion

A series of election results across the United States has introduced significant regulatory hurdles for the artificial intelligence industry. According to data from Redbud Consulting, voters in ten states approved 38 out of 44 ballot measures aimed at curbing the construction of data centers, effectively signaling a shift in local legislative priorities.

The approved measures include numerous moratoriums and operational bans. While analysts suggest that these mandates will likely not affect projects already underway or approved through 2027, they pose substantial risks to development pipelines scheduled for 2028 and beyond. In instances where projects were granted conditional approval, developers now face mandatory independent audits and public hearing requirements.

Beyond specific infrastructure votes, the election also saw the success of candidates who campaigned on platforms of stricter AI oversight. As these officials take office in key states, the industry faces an increasingly challenging environment for scaling the physical capacity required to support future AI development.
