US Extends ACT for ALS Research and Treatment Program Through 2031

The United States government has signed legislation reauthorizing the ACT for ALS program, extending critical research and treatment access initiatives until 2031. First established in 2021, the program serves as a foundation for testing experimental therapies and accelerating medical development for patients living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The ALS Association, which advocated for the bill's passage, stated that the extension aims to remove barriers to care and solidify funding for clinical trials. The organization worked with bipartisan congressional partners to ensure the legislation prioritizes patient needs, specifically regarding the speed of drug development and the transparency of research results.

CEO Calaneet Balas noted that the legislative success is a response to the urgent needs of the ALS community, as the disease is typically fatal within five years of diagnosis. The association highlighted that the reauthorization allows researchers to continue assessing which treatments are effective for those with limited options.

Moving forward, the initiative remains focused on translating research into approved treatments. The bill’s passage ensures continued resources for those affected by the neurodegenerative disease, which impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing a steady loss of mobility and respiratory function.
