US Inflation Accelerates, Stagflation Risk Rises

The September US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report indicated a faster-than-expected acceleration in inflation. Both headline and core inflation figures exceeded forecasts, intensifying financial strain on American households and complicating the Federal Reserve's decision-making process.

Headline inflation rose by 0.6% month-over-month in September, up from 0.4% in August, reaching 3.7% year-over-year compared to 3.4%. Core inflation, excluding energy and food, also increased by 0.3% month-over-month, maintaining the previous month's pace. Annually, core inflation stood at 2.6%, up from 2.4%.

Energy costs were a significant driver of the inflation surge, accounting for a large portion of the increase with a 5.2% rise in September. Concurrently, wage growth is lagging behind inflation. The September jobs report showed wage increases of only 3% year-over-year, indicating a decline in purchasing power for many US households. Broad-based price pressures and geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, contribute to sustained inflationary pressures.

The elevated inflation outlook has increased market speculation about a potential interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve at its October meeting. While the probability of a rate hike has risen, experts suggest it is unlikely so close to the midterm elections. Long-term inflation expectations, however, remain elevated. As stagflation risks grow, investment strategies are increasingly considering multi-asset trend strategies, along with gold and precious metals.
