U.S. job growth continues in October as part-time work rises

The U.S. labor market expanded in October, with employers adding 165,000 jobs and the unemployment rate edging down to 4.1%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) also issued upward revisions for August and September, suggesting that the economy was more resilient in late summer than previously reported.

Despite the headline growth, underlying data indicates strain for many workers. The number of Americans working part-time for economic reasons—specifically citing slack work or unfavorable business conditions—jumped by 339,000, reaching 4.8 million. This suggests that while companies are retaining staff, they are actively reducing hours to manage costs.

Inflation remains a persistent factor impacting the labor force, as average hourly earnings growth of 3.1% continues to trail the 3.7% increase in the consumer price index. This wage-inflation gap remains a primary point of concern regarding household affordability.

Sector-specific gains were led by professional and business services, which contributed 70,000 positions, followed by health care with 42,000 jobs and transportation and warehousing with 25,000 jobs. The transportation sector, bolstered by high demand for courier services, has added 104,000 jobs since February, while manufacturing employment maintains a steady upward trend.
