U.S. Job Openings Increase to 7.5 Million in September

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that job openings rose to 7.5 million in September, up from a revised 7.19 million in August. This figure marks the highest level of vacancies since May and suggests a potential uptick in employer demand despite broader concerns regarding inflation and interest rates.

Data from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) indicated that gross hiring increased while layoffs dropped to 1.64 million, the lowest level since March 2025. Furthermore, the number of employees quitting their positions rose to 3.37 million, a potential indicator of increased worker confidence in the labor market.

Professional and business services saw the most significant growth in openings, joined by manufacturing and shipping sectors. However, economists warn that sustained high costs for business operations could temper further expansion. While the current data provides a positive signal, analysts note that the trend must persist over several months to confirm a shift from the sluggish hiring patterns observed over the past three years.
