U.S. Legal Services Launches New Legal Plan for College Students' Parents
U.S. Legal Services has introduced "College Defender," a new legal protection plan designed for parents of college students to cover campus-related legal issues.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 9, 2026 – U.S. Legal Services, a provider of legal protection plans since 1974, has launched "College Defender," a new offering specifically built for parents of college students.
The plan aims to provide parents with access to an attorney for a range of legal situations arising from campus life. This includes campus conduct hearings, Title IX complaints, academic misconduct allegations, such as the use of artificial intelligence in student work, and common legal issues like housing disputes or minor criminal matters.
Kyle Sweet, Chairman and CEO of U.S. Legal Services, highlighted the necessity of the plan. "Parents spend months preparing a student for college and rarely plan for the legal side of campus life," Sweet stated. He specifically mentioned Title IX hearings and academic integrity accusations, which parents might not be privy to due to privacy laws.
College Defender also includes a document package under FERPA, HIPAA, and POA, designed to help families maintain access to their student's information after they turn 18, with consent. The plan addresses identity theft, contract disputes, and provides emergency legal access. The monthly cost is $38.60 and includes a parent education guide.
The company stated the plan is structured for parents to manage billing, with the student as the policyholder who utilizes the coverage. U.S. Legal Services also offers identity protection as an add-on service. The plan is rolling out in select states, with further details available on the company's website.
