The U.S. government has removed export controls on Anthropic's artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The restrictions, imposed on June 12, were lifted on June 30, allowing the AI company to re-establish global access for international users after a hiatus of nearly three weeks.

Fable 5 was scheduled to become globally available from July 1 through the Claude platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Users on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans were to receive access under 50% of existing usage limits until July 7, after which the model would transition to usage-based credits. Anthropic also stated its intention to restore availability on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry as quickly as possible.

The export controls were implemented following an Amazon research report that indicated a specific prompt could bypass some of Fable 5's safeguards and identify software vulnerabilities. Consequently, Anthropic suspended access to both models as it could not immediately verify the nationality of users attempting to access them.

On June 26, the government approved the restoration of Mythos 5 access for a limited group of U.S. organizations while discussions continued regarding broader availability. Anthropic reported that Fable 5's cybersecurity protections have been strengthened in collaboration with the U.S. government, Amazon, and other partners prior to the restoration of access. A newly developed safety classifier reportedly blocks the identified bypass technique in over 99% of cases.
