US Marks 25th Anniversary of September 11 Terrorist Attacks

The United States is marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Al-Qaeda's attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania claimed nearly 3,000 lives and fundamentally reshaped U.S. security policy.

The day is being observed with memorial ceremonies, including wreath-laying, moments of silence, and the reading of victims' names. Many schools are also using the occasion for educational purposes about the attacks, which are remembered as a historic event by nearly half of all adult Americans.

The U.S.-led global war on terrorism, which included invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, was launched in response to the attacks. The events also led to significant changes in air travel security, increased federal surveillance and intelligence powers, and the creation of new regulations and funding for counterterrorism efforts.

Beyond the immediate security shifts, the attacks spurred a wave of national unity but also fueled mistrust and hate crimes directed at Muslim communities. Over the years, Muslim Americans have increasingly participated in public life, reaching significant positions.
