US Power Plant Data Shows Solar Dominance in First Half of Year
Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration reveals that 368 utility-scale power plants began operation in the U.S. from January to June. Solar energy projects constituted the largest share of these new facilities.

The U.S. power sector saw significant activity in the first half of 2024, with 368 new utility-scale power plants commencing operations. According to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), solar power projects formed the dominant portion of these new additions.
While solar energy led in numbers, the largest single projects to come online were two wind farms in New Mexico: SunZia Wind South and SunZia Wind North. These combined represent the largest wind farms in the country, with a total generating capacity of 3,650 megawatts. The SunZia project has been in development for approximately a decade.
The completion of the SunZia wind farms arrives at a time when U.S. onshore wind power development has faced challenges, attributed to regulatory issues and public opinion. Their operation marks a notable event for the wind sector, which has seen a slowdown in new projects.
