US Robot Distributor Shifts to Domestic Production Amid Ban Concerns

RoboStore, a prominent US distributor for Chinese robotics firm Unitree Robotics, has announced a strategic shift to domestic manufacturing. The company plans to establish its own robot production facility on Long Island, New York, moving away from its prior role as a sole distributor for foreign-made robots.

This pivot appears to be a response to escalating US government regulations and concerns surrounding the import of advanced robotics from China. RoboStore previously served as the primary North American supplier for Unitree's popular and affordably priced humanoid and quadruped robots, which have been utilized by institutions such as Harvard and MIT, as well as major technology firms including Amazon and Nvidia for research and development.

RoboStore founder and CEO Teddy Haggerty stated that the company has sold and deployed over 1,500 robots to a diverse clientele. This customer base includes corporations like Cisco and OpenAI, alongside technology giants like Nvidia and over 150 universities. The transition to domestic production aims to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions impacting foreign technology imports.

The company's new manufacturing venture on Long Island signifies a significant change in its business model. By producing robots domestically, RoboStore seeks to ensure a stable supply chain and maintain its market presence in the face of evolving US trade policies concerning robotics.
