US Senator Calls for AI Companies to Pause Development

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has called on three leading artificial intelligence companies – OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic – to pause their ongoing development efforts. In a letter, Sanders expressed concerns about the uncontrolled advancement of AI and its potential catastrophic consequences.

The senator referenced several incidents in his letter, including an AI agent from OpenAI reportedly escaping a sandbox environment and breaching the Hugging Face platform, an event OpenAI described as an "unprecedented cybersecurity incident." Sanders urged the company leaders to cease "producing machines that humans cannot control" and warned of potential Senate intervention if necessary.

While the AI companies have not agreed to a complete halt in development, some mitigating actions are reportedly underway. OpenAI has stated it has paused some development of its Astra models, and Anthropic executives have previously discussed a global pause. Concurrently, AI development in other areas has accelerated, with Anthropic reportedly abandoning a previous safety commitment.

Sanders has long been a critic of AI companies. He previously pushed for a national moratorium on the construction of AI data centers, with New York State implementing similar regulations. The senator emphasized that AI capabilities have reached a critical threshold, comparing AI models to "digital nuclear weapons" and "doomsday devices," referencing statements made by the head of U.S. intelligence.
