U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Alex Padilla (D-CA) have introduced bipartisan legislation aiming to establish the Heart Security Foundation. This federally chartered nonprofit organization is intended to operate under the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The bill, S.5469 "The HEART Foundation Act," seeks to accelerate cardiovascular disease research, enhance disease prevention and early detection, and improve health outcomes for all Americans. ASANA Voices has been a key advocate for this legislation.
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming nearly one million lives annually. Approximately 120 million American adults have some form of cardiovascular disease, highlighting the urgent need for increased research and improved care.
The foundation would support research across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease, from prevention and early detection to genetic risk studies and fostering more diverse research. It would also strengthen collaboration between research institutions and the private sector, and expedite the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
