US Space Force Seeks Site for Third Heavy-Lift Spaceport

The US Space Force has initiated plans to develop a third heavy-lift spaceport, aiming to decentralize launch operations currently concentrated at long-standing bases in Florida and California. These existing sites, which have facilitated orbital launches for nearly 70 years, are facing increasing demand that necessitates additional infrastructure.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink confirmed the requirement for a new base, citing a congressionally mandated study that underscored the necessity for sites capable of supporting heavy and super-heavy rocket launches. The expansion is viewed as a strategic move to ensure launch reliability and capacity for future missions.

While the Space Force targets a 2030 operational date, the project remains in preliminary stages. Officials have yet to select a location or finalize the legal and logistical framework for land acquisition, presenting a significant hurdle for the four-year timeline.
