US Tariffs: BDC Offers Business Guidance

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is providing businesses with support and strategies to manage the trade uncertainty introduced by new U.S. tariffs. The bank highlights that while tariffs can cause immediate concern, they do not necessarily lead to disaster and instead require rapid adaptation and considered decisions.

BDC advises businesses to begin with an assessment to understand precisely how tariffs affect their operations. This involves speaking with customers, suppliers, and distributors to identify potential shifts such as decreased demand or increased prices. Consulting with customs brokers is also recommended to clarify border impacts and value chain risks.

As a next step, BDC recommends building various scenarios to evaluate the effects of tariffs. Relying on a single forecast can be misleading. Instead, modeling several potential futures, such as price stability, sales decline, or reduced orders from major clients, helps businesses anticipate impacts on revenue, margins, and cash flow.

The bank also stresses the importance of monitoring cash flow and offers financing options should short-term shortfalls arise. Once different scenarios are identified, businesses can review their options, including adjusting prices, seeking new domestic or international customers, and potentially leveraging public procurement or large domestic projects to foster growth and diversification.
