US threatens sanctions on Chinese AI models over IP theft
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Tuesday that the U.S. will examine Chinese open-source AI models for intellectual property theft and threatens sanctions if violations are detected.
The U.S. government intends to scrutinize Chinese open-source artificial intelligence models for potential intellectual property theft, threatening sanctions against Chinese AI companies if violations are found. The statement, first reported by Bloomberg, signals growing concerns in the U.S. over China's rapid advancements in AI.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Fox Business Tuesday, "We’ve seen a lot of talk about open source models coming and threatening the large language models in the US. This administration supports open source models, but what we do not support is IP theft. If we see, especially, that overseas models are stealing from our great companies, we have the ability to sanction them because of this theft."
The announcement comes as Chinese models, most recently Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, have gained in capability and popularity. These models pose a threat to the business models of U.S. firms like OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as their ability to raise capital for further frontier model development.
On Monday, Axios reported that the Trump administration is considering a wholesale ban on Chinese open-source AI models. This policy would continue previous efforts to slow China's progress in the AI sector.
