US Workers Spend Nearly $7,000 Annually on Office Commute Costs

American workers spend an average of $6,736 per year simply to show up at the office, according to a study by resume-building platform Resume.io. These expenses, encompassing commuting, food, and coffee, have seen significant increases for many.

Commuting accounts for over 40% of these costs, totaling $2,751 annually, covering public transit, gas, and other related expenses. Food and coffee purchases at the office add another $2,598 per year on average. The study found that 53.2% of workers reported an increase in their office-related costs over the last 12 months.

Resume.io analyzed federal wage, commuting, fuel, and price data across the 36 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. They also surveyed 1,000 full-time office workers regarding their weekly spending on commuting, parking, meals, and childcare.

Significant variations exist between cities. Austin, Texas, presents the highest annual costs for office workers at an average of $7,424, partly due to the nation's longest average commute. Las Vegas is the most affordable city at $5,588 per year. Surprisingly, some of the country's most expensive cities, like New York and San Francisco, are relatively less costly for office workers when local salaries are factored in.

Beyond monetary expenses, going to the office also consumes considerable time. Workers spend an average of 184 hours annually commuting, equivalent to 23 full workdays. Additionally, preparing for an office day takes an average of 43.4 minutes longer than for a work-from-home day, adding another 137 hours per year.
