US Young Adults Mistrust AI and Its Tech Leaders, Survey Finds
A new survey indicates growing distrust among young Americans towards artificial intelligence (AI) and the prominent tech executives championing its development.
A recent survey conducted by CNBC and Generation Labs among 1,088 Americans aged 18 to 34 reveals increasing wariness towards artificial intelligence (AI). This distrust extends to the prominent tech leaders actively promoting AI development, with a majority of respondents stating they do not trust figures like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Mark Zuckerberg.
The survey found that 45% of young adults believe AI will negatively impact their career development, while only 10% see it as beneficial. Economic and employment pressures were also cited as significant concerns for the future.
The distrust also targets key figures in the AI industry. When asked if they trusted influential individuals to handle AI responsibly, none of the listed nine prominent figures received positive ratings. Palantir CEO Alex Karp had the highest distrust rate at 81%, followed by Palantir Chairman Peter Thiel at 79%. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei both scored 75% distrust.
Regarding AI regulation, 40% of respondents believe the federal government should set the rules, and 36% favor independent expert agencies. Only 8% think AI should not be regulated. Additionally, 60% of young adults believe the construction pace of data centers should slow down.
