USA and Iran agree on framework deal, expert warns against optimism

The United States and Iran have agreed upon a framework deal aimed at resolving their conflict following weeks of intensive negotiations. The agreement, confirmed by mediator Pakistan, was announced on Sunday and is scheduled for signing in Geneva on Friday, June 19. According to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, both sides have committed to an immediate and final cessation of military operations on all fronts, as well as an end to the conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.

The precise wording of the agreement has not yet been released. A key component involves the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas trade, which will be accessible to shipping only after the deal is signed, citing necessary mine-clearing operations. Concurrently, the U.S. president has ordered the immediate lifting of the American naval blockade on Iranian ports, a primary demand from Tehran. Oil prices saw a significant drop shortly after the news of the agreement broke.

The Iranian side views the accord as more than just a ceasefire. A strategic advisor to Iran's lead negotiator stated that Iran has secured U.S. guarantees on behalf of Israel, something Washington had previously rejected. The agreement also lays the groundwork for further negotiations concerning Iran's nuclear program, which are expected to conclude within 60 days.

However, experts are cautioning against premature optimism. One commentator described the situation as "not even the beginning of the end." The broader political implications for stability in the Middle East remain uncertain, as do potential shifts in the U.S.-Israel relationship stemming from this agreement.
