USA Today Publisher Sues OpenAI Over Copyright Claims

Gannett Company, the publisher of USA Today and numerous local newspapers, has filed a lawsuit against AI company OpenAI. The suit claims OpenAI has unlawfully copied "hundreds of thousands" of articles to train its artificial intelligence models. The publisher is seeking over $250 million in damages, asserting that OpenAI's unauthorized use of its content has caused "real and continuing" harm.

This lawsuit marks the latest in a series of legal challenges against OpenAI concerning its data practices. The New York Times filed a similar copyright infringement suit in December 2023. OpenAI also faces legal action from other entities, including The Intercept and Ziff Davis, the owner of CNET.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between media organizations and AI developers regarding the use of copyrighted material for training AI systems. Many content creators are concerned about the unauthorized use of their work without compensation.

The filing occurred on Thursday. The specifics of the allegations are now part of public record as the case proceeds through the legal system. OpenAI has not yet issued a public statement regarding this new litigation.
