USPS to implement permanent variable fuel surcharge in 2027

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced plans to implement a permanent, variable fuel surcharge beginning in January 2027. The adjustment will apply to domestic shipping options, including Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and Parcel Select, with fees calculated weekly based on fluctuating diesel and fuel price indices provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

This shift moves the agency away from the fixed temporary surcharges used in the past, such as the eight-percent flat fee set to expire in early 2026. The move aligns USPS pricing policy with private-sector competitors like FedEx and UPS, which have utilized variable fuel surcharges for years to manage the impact of energy costs on logistics operations.

The agency maintains that these measures are necessary to offset the volatility of fuel prices. Meanwhile, USPS management reports that preparations for the upcoming holiday peak season are underway, with the service aiming to build on improved delivery performance metrics seen over the previous two years.
