USPTO Implements AI-Powered Image Search in Trademark System

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered image search functionality within its public trademark search system, TM Search. The technology powering this new feature is provided by Clarivate Plc, a global provider of intellectual property information services.

This update allows users to upload images and compare them against the U.S. trademark register. The system is designed to help identify visually similar marks that might be difficult to find using traditional classification-based searches, thereby improving search efficiency and accuracy.

The AI-assisted search employs advanced image recognition capabilities to facilitate a more intuitive exploration of trademark image data. By surfacing visually comparable marks, the USPTO aims to enhance the process of trademark clearance for applicants and practitioners.

Sandra Mau, Vice President of Product Management, Intellectual Property at Clarivate, stated that visual similarity is crucial for trademark clearance and historically challenging. She added that the AI models, trained on trusted IP data, support the USPTO in making trademark searches more accessible and advancing innovation.

Clarivate notes that similar image search technologies are integrated into its broader solutions used by legal and corporate IP teams, supporting activities like trademark clearance and portfolio analysis. The company emphasizes its continued investment in applying AI and data to meet the evolving needs of the intellectual property sector.
